Part 8
At the palace's white gates and towering walls, Kari explained to an unsmiling guard that she wanted to see the king. The guard checked her and Jonn for weapons and snorted. "You and your escort may enter, but I warn you, you may not come back out alive."

"That's fine," Veronishia said uncertain if she really felt "fine". When Veronishia and Kristopheras were led to the throne room, they saw the king was dozing off to sleep. He woke up with a start when he saw Veronishia enter.

"Jaycie! You're back," he said excitedly. Before Veronishia could explain that she was not Jaycie, the king cried, "Who is that man accompanying you? Is he your husband? No, I shall not allow it! Guards take him away."

"No, he's not my hus..," protested Veronishia as a guard put a hand over her mouth and pulled her back from Kristopheras.

"Jaycie, come here," King Taysasluny said. Veronishia obeyed and when she got close enough to the king she said quite calmly, "I am not Jaycie. My name is Veronishia and the boy you just took away was my brother Kristopheras. I'd like to have him released immediately."

The king said, "Yes, I see. You are not Jaycie though I must say you look quite like her. How would you like to be my queen, Veronishia? And my, what an elegant name for a girl who obviously comes from a village to seek my fancy."

Veronishia shouted at the king, "First of all, I hate you and would never want to be your wife! Second, I am not seeking your fancy or whatever! I came here to make my country happy and free of your lunatic rule!" The whole court gasped at her boldness at the king and at what she said next.

"And for your information Mr. Cruel and Insane, I am your daughter and Kristopheras is your son. I am asking you to let your subjects actually enjoy life without you killing a relative of theirs every few months just because you feel like it!" The king just stared at her. He wasn't used to anyone yelling at him. Then it dawned on him. Veronishia and Kristopheras were the twins he had with Jaycie about fifteen years ago. He was just stunned and sat there like a big potato sack.

"So, I kindly ask you to get off this throne, get out of my life and get out of here!" Veronishia said. When the king came to his senses, he said to Veronishia," You are so stupid, nobody's going to make me do what I don't want to do, so there." He stuck out his tongue at her and said quite sarcastically," I know how anxious you've been to enjoy palace life my dear darling little girl. That's why I am providing you and your dear brother with free accommodations at La Dungeon. Guards, take her away!"

When the guards left her in the dungeon cell, she cried out, "Kristopheras!?" He answered back, "What?" His voice echoed throughout the cave like setting. The musty smell of the dark cell and the number of cockroaches started to make her feel nauseous. "So how'd you do, Veronishia?" asked Kristopheras. "How do you think I did? I'm in this stinky, dirty, disgusting place underground. I pretty much told him to get out of here, that I hated him and well, that we're his children. And I also refused his proposal to marriage. How does that sound?" Kristopheras was in the next cell and said, "Now would be a good time to join the pendants I guess." After a long pause, Veronishia stuck her arm over the small window of the cell wall that was covered with of spider webs and Kristopheras joined the pendants together. The pendants glowed. "Wow, I guess it's magic," Kristopheras said in awe.

"No wonder there are spider webs, this place hasn't been in use for years. The king never bothered to put anyone here. He just had them killed," Veronishia spoke loud enough so that her brother could hear.

"Oh, stop being such a pessimist. I mean, at least we're not dead."

"Yeah, I guess that's good, but was I wrong to suggest we come here?"

"I don't know the answer to that one but I do know that I won't enjoy sleeping on a bed of rat poop." They both tried to stay awake by talking but eventually sleep came over them.
