Part 5 - The Truth |
"Actually, Jonn, I think it would be better if I talked to your mother or father
about this so... Can I go to your village?" Kari's mother asked.
"Okay," replied Jonn. When they got there, Jonn's mother greeted them. "Hi, I'm Lian, Kari's mother." "And I'm Cala, Jonn's mother and this is Jonn's father, Nyan." "I guess you've already figured out everything," Lian addressed the teenagers. They both shook their heads. "Kari...It never occurred to me that I'd have to tell you this but...Kari, you were adopted" began Lian. "Jonn, you were...adopted also," Cala started, "We found you in a basket, floating downstream on a brook. Of course, we couldn't let you stay in that basket. You were just a newborn." "Well, when we found you Jonn, you had that anklet on you," added Nyan. "Kari, your real name isn't Kari, it's Veronishia. I'm not your mother either. I am your aunt. Your mother, Jaycie was a young handmaiden at King Taysasluny's court and while your mother hated him, he loved her. Your mother couldn't really do anything about the situation, he could have had her executed. When she had you two, she fled because the king wanted to kill both of you. She told me that these two amulets, when joined together, would keep you safe from the king's evil. About a week later, the guards came to search our village. They were suspicious but did not have proof. I also changed your birthdate so it's actually a month later than what you thought," Lian paused to take a deep breath. "So Kari, I know you really like Jonn but you must know that you two can never love each other more than brother and sister for Jonn is Kristopheras," she finished. Kari sat there in shock. Nyan confirmed to Jonn, "You are Kristopheras." "Mother, are you telling me that I am the daughter of the king and Jaycie?" Kari asked finding it hard to believe anything she had just heard. "Yes, and that blue-green scarf father gave you when you were seven was what you were wrapped in when Jaycie gave you to me." Kari's mother broke down sobbing, "Jaycie, oh Jaycie, where are you now? I hope you made it and are happy now." Jonn sat thinking," This has to be a nightmare. This pendant has ruined my plans for marrying Kari." He was mad but somehow relieved to know how he got his half of the pendant. "Oh, um, how do we get the pendant apart?" he asked. Lian showed Kari and Jonn how. The whole time Kari was thinking the boy whom she had kissed and hugged, laughed with and planned to marry was...her brother? She couldn't believe it. It couldn't possibly be happening. Her world of happiness and simplicity was falling apart. Cala invited Kari and Lian to spend the night in their village, and they accepted. |
