Kari woke up the next morning and walked over to Jonn's room. "You know
what, I hate that stupid king. I want to make him suffer for ruining everything and
everyone's lives," she said to Jonn. Jonn was not quite awake yet and sleepily
asked, "What?"
"I'm going to get revenge at the king. Want to come with me? I still love you, you know." "Sure, what have I got to lose? Just my life." "Even if you lose your life, you won't lose my love for you." "Gosh Kari, I was just joking. You know I'll still go with you." "It's so weird though Jonn...or should I say Kristopheras?" They both laughed. "I don't want you to be my brother," said Kari. "I love you too much to be my brother," she continued as she sat down next to him. "You know Kari, I don't love you any less for being my sister. I can only love you more. If I could ask you to marry me, I would." "Jonn, you're getting too mushy." "It's true though. Why don't we go eat breakfast and tell them our plan to get revenge at the king with the help of our anklets?" he suggested as he smiled. When they broke the news, they were surprised that no one laughed at them or told them it was too foolish. It seemed that everybody knew it was fate or something of the sort. Everyone was solemn and wished them best of luck. The chief asked them when they were leaving and arranged to have supplies ready. On the big day, both families waved good-bye to them as they began their journey. Both mothers wept at the sight of their children leaving. For Kari and Jonn, it was an adventure. They walked along the stream, knowing that it would lead to the palace. When they got to a fork in the stream, they knew they were almost there. While Jonn was munching on some wild fruit, Kari shouted, "I see it! I see the palace!" As they walked towards the palace, Kari asked Jonn, "Do you think we should call each other by our real names or the names we're used to?" "Probably our real names. I hope we don't have real middle names too because I want to use Jonn as my middle name." "It is going to be weird. I won't be used to Veronishia for a long time." "Are you going to have Kari as your middle name, Veronishia? Veronishia Kari, not bad." "I think Kristopheras Jonn sounds better," Kari commented. "We should also put our anklets together if we're going to meet the king right away although it's going to be very inconvenient to walk with our feet joined together. I guess we should just join them later." "Okay but you know what? Let's just put the anklets on our wrists like bracelets. When the anklet chain gets used to our wrists, it'll probably shrink." "Yeah, maybe," Jonn said doubtfully. "Kari, I have one small favor to ask of you before they recognize us as brother and sister." Kari turned to look at Jonn and began to say "What?" when Jonn pulled her off the trail and kissed her. She returned his kiss before heading back onto the dirt path. And then they became Veronishia and Kristopheras, sister and brother. |
