- Getting lost... AGAIN!

Ah, the sweet smell of early morning... an early CLOUDY Wednesday morning!

This was not to be like any morning... nor like any cloudy Wednesday morning...

The K@ had a scholarship check to deposit at her off-campus bank. There was a branch on University Avenue. However, she had recently discovered that there was another branch off El Camino. Being the curious person that she is, she decided to go to the other one.

Yes, curiousity killed the cat, but that's probably why cats have 9 lives.

Anyway, K@ looked on Mapquest for the quickest route to her destination. Oh, a side note, the K@ has no bike. She also has not yet mastered the ability to warp time and space at her own choosing. So the current solution has been to run to the location. Walking works too, but is slow.

The K@ finds El Camino interesting... very different from University. She makes it to the bank - very happy. She even makes a small donation towards Special Olympics there. :-) Mission accomplished, she runs back onto campus - onto Serra. On the way back, she passes Escondido Graduate housing. Mentally, she sees that if she cuts across Escondido Village, she can save time instead of going all the way to where Serra and Campus Drive meet.

This is where the trouble begins - although the K@ has no idea.

She has cut acrosss Escondido.. and notices how nice the apartments are, as well as some of those EXPENSIVE cars! Then, she spies... PLAYGROUND! Swings! These are for the children of graduate students. And, probably for any genius 4 year old whom Stanford happens to admit.

The delight is suspended when the K@ realizes that she has hit a dead end - she has been fenced in. But Lo and Behold! There is another fence with an open gate over yonder! So K@ runs over to the OTHER gate and makes it out alright. She continues running in the general direction of her dorm until she reaches Stanford Avenue.

For some strange reason, she thinks that Stanford Avenue intersects with where she needs to go (in fact, it is PARALLEL!!!) Running running, she discovers an elementary school, a couple churches (they look like houses), a creek and a bridge, another school and little kids, another dead end, cool trails for running... and that in front of her are the... FOOTHILLS?

Euh, last time the K@ checked, the Hoover Tower did not have a backdrop of the Foothills. THEN she realizes where she is... sort of. Or at least what direction she is heading towards. The Foothills are West and she wanted to go North at the center of campus. (No wonder it was taking so long to get back - she had almost run across the south side of campus*)

Aiya! What time is it? 10:40 am. She has class at 11 am. Uh oh...

Luckily, a kind biker, probably a professor, directed her up some really steep street (shortcut through a hill) so that the K@ made it back to her dorm in time to change and run to math class!

It was quite strange though - most people were freezing and wearing much clothing. However, that morning, K@ had just changed to shorts and a t-shirt because of all the adrenaline, she forgot about the cold. When she got out of class though.. she realized... IT WAS COLD! That was effective to get her RUNNING (again) back to her room to wear clothing more suited to the current weather.

* For running all over the NORTH side of campus, West to East - see the Dec 12, 2002 adventure.
