- The Water ARC at the North Bank of the Chicago River sprays at a rate of 2100 gallons
per minute with 375 pounds of water pressure per square inch.
- Rainsticks are made from dead cactus branches. When rainsticks are rotated, small stones
within them travel through a dormation of sharp thorns producing a soothing, rain-like
sound.
- The first tin can was invented in 1810 in England. However, the first can opener was not
developed until 1855. The first cans came with the instructions "Cut round on the top
with a chisel and a hammer."
- Africa has the longest river in the world, the Nile at 4145 miles, the largest desert,
the Sahara at 3.5 million square miles, and the longest freshwater lake, Lake Tanganyika
at 420 miles. Its climate varies widely. Within miles are deserts and ski slopes.
- The Nez Perce, a Native American people, spent part of each summer along Wallowa Lake
(in Oregon). In their languge, "wallowa" is a support for a fish trap used to
catch salmon. Chief Joseph, an important leader, may have been born there.
- Because of the time zones, it is possible for one to arrive before one leaves. An
example would be leaving Atlanta, Georgia, at 1:39 pm and arrive at Birmingham at 1:25 pm.
- Woven fabric will not stretch much if pulled along the a weft or warp thread. However,
fabric pulled along the bias will stretch better. Mlle Madeline Vionnet introduced the
bias cut.
