Just days before the two tracks were joined, the Central Pacific Railroad
Company set a record when it layed 10 miles of track in one day, beating the 8.5 mile
record set by rivals Union Pacific Railroad Company. The Orient Express originated in 1883 to provide train service from Paris to Constantinople (now called Istanbul). It actually was many connected train systems and included several destinations.
