September 28, 2002 - San Francisco, Caffeine, and Mahjong |
|
I went to San Francisco with my dorm. It was crazy. There was a scavenger hunt. People were assigned groups to go scavenging with. Activities included standing in a pyramid on top of Lombard, the most crooked road, buying an RA something cheap in ChinaTown, buying something from Big Al's in Castro District, spelling "Cal Sucks" in front of the Blue and Gold Fleet,
and eating an Earthquake from Ghiradelli Square. They also included kissing a cable car driver and nudity in a glass elevator.
It was not mandatory to do everything but there was a range to choose from. Each group received a camera to record their daring deeds. And the RAs (Resident Assistants) would choose which group did the best and reward them with something. We walked from Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf (through Chinatown and Little Italy). We had lunch in a Chinese restaurant - very strange to eat individual "entrees" instead of sharing as usual. Then we walked to Ghiradelli Square. Then we went up Hyde (very very steep hill) up to Lombard. Then we took a cable car back to Union Square. (We walked around in small groups) Dinner was with Eric since the Cheesecake Factory was booked, comme toujours. The RAs told us to just go somewhere to eat. Afterwards, we visited Nike shop before going home, exhausted, on the Marguerite Shuttles that brought us up. So when I got back last night, I was SO tired. Then Sihong (from Singapore) went crazy looking for people to play Mahjong with him (he just bought a set from Chinatown). I acquiesced on the condition that we play just 1 round (4 games - on the East). Since I was so tired, Sihong offered me Red Bull... I have never encountered so sudden a change in mood induced by drugs, in this case, caffeine. (Well, maybe Vicodin after wisdom teeth extraction - but that took longer) I went from being dead tired to hyper active in 10 minutes. Thus, I have decided I will try to avoid Red Bull... Brian and Sihong's Singaporean friend also played. We played with flowers. It was a little confusing at first since the other 3 play very fast and can speak mandarin. We had to clear up what different terms meant. They also play a different style. They called what I play Hong Kong style. Anyway, the two Singaporeans each won once, with 1 faan. Then I won with 2 faan. And the 4th one I won with 3 faan (1 being a dzee mo credit :-) ) |
