October 12, 2002 - Berkeley and Quiz Bowl |
|
I have a math mid-term next Friday and a fat paper due on Monday morning (today is Saturday) - yay quarter system...
I was at UC Berkeley today for Quiz Bowl - where I was blown out of the water by scary grad students. This is what happened earlier: I went to sleep last night around 11pm - because I knew I'd have to be up at 6:45 doing College Bowl and getting more than 6 hours of sleep might be good for this kind of thing. Seven and three quarter hours later, the alarm goes off - I turn it off, intending to get about 5 min more of sleep before rolling out of bed. Somehow, those 5 minutes went through scalar multiplication and became 42 min, because the next thing I know, it is 7:27am - and we were supposed to be at Tressider ready to go at 7:15am. I contemplate for a moment on whether to stay and study or try to make it to College Bowl. In a mad dash, I change and run out to Tressider (good thing I live so close!) and lo and behold, they have not left yet. So, I run back (sprint back) to grab a sweatshirt. I don't think we left until almost 8 - which annoyed me slightly, because then I would have had time to change my away message.... ( Thus, until about 8:30 pm, the K@'s AIM away message indicated that she was sleeping.... *** Auto-response sent to *insert screenname*: Hi %n :-) sleeping now - Berkeley College Bowl 7:15 am Saturday... :-P Leave me a message :-)
Anyway, at Quiz Bowl - I got maybe 1 question right - the rest I either didn't know, or got it after someone buzzed in, or knew the other team's question. :-/
Learning conversational Mandarin is my new hobby - I might take the class for credit/no credit since it is only 2 units and no hwk... :-)
I'm also learning swing dancing on sundays (by the swing dance club on campus) One of the upperclassmen in my dorm is teaching us how to waltz - he game me a nice compliment about my dancing is less bad than other people's (who are in the official Stanford dance classes) :-)
I went to see Minority Report again last Sunday. Also, since I have gotten to Stanford, I've been watching movies: Fire, Spices, and Monsoon Wedding (Hindi) and Samsara (some kind of Tibetan language). They're mainly for class - We went from Hinduism (Ancient) to Buddhism (the three major forms) and will start on the Old Testament Tues.
Friday afternoon, I waited 1.25 hours in line to get a ticket to the Wednesday talk to be given by the former prime minister of Israel, Ehud Barak, but I was too late. I am now #61 on the waiting list.
