K@'s Freshman Logs
November 8, 2002

It rained today - day and night. I went with some friends to see Jason Garfield - the much talked about world class juggler. My big sib Steph, along with a few other members of Stanford's Down With Gravity juggling group, helped with the performance. I do not recommend that you support Jason Garfield in any way through attending his performances or buying whatever he has to sell. I was tempted to leave in the middle of the performance.

He has a very bad, impatient and belittling attitude towards audience members. He seems to find it amusing. It probably boosts his self esteem. Yes, he can do great feats - feats that almost no one else can perform. He is gifted. Yet, I have found that it is more important to be kind, humble, friendly, etc and somewhat ordinary, than to be arrogant, mean, selfish, etc and highly talented.

Fortunately, most people I have encountered at Stanford are of the former sort. It continues to amaze me how "ordinary" people appear to be, how ordinary and silly the things I do with dormmates, but realize at the same time, that these will be the future leaders of the world. Someone here is going to invent something we won't be able to do without. Someone here is going to be the CEO of some Fortune 500 company. Someone here is going to lead a state, a province, a country.

I cannot believe how lucky I am to get to know them now - I get to know them before they are famous! I get to work with such highly talented individuals!

Happy Birthday Nicholas!
