First Week of Classes! This quarter is crazy for me! 19 units and auditing 6 and working. I don't know how it will go but maybe towards the end of the quarter, the audited classes will have to go. Economics is very fun! There is a web site which goes with the book. It has become my favorite site right now because of all the mini-quizzes and lectures that serve as a study guide. There are even crossword puzzles! My CS course looks to be pretty good - I am looking forward to it. Unfortunately, I have to miss one class on Friday this week because I am going on the dorm ski trip. I am going to learn how to snowboard this weekend - I hope! I have a new section leader this quarter for SLE (the humanities class). Discussions are fantastic now! We are actually discussing whereas last quarter, section comprised of the section leader picking a topic beforehand and we had to talk about that one topic even if it seemed contradictory to the class. In other words, this section leader has a more broad and open discussion that fosters each student's thinking whereas the other one was almost like another lecture but worse. Lectures are usually interesting. On Tuesday, I went to a Bioethics in Human Biology lecture - it is very interesting. I may audit this course since taking it would mean I would have to write a 4-5 page paper at the end, on top of a relatively heavy load of SLE, CS, and Econ finals/projects. My Chinese class is fun. Although I am auditing it, I am so far participating much more than most other students. Today, I will role play a Chinese girl who is studying in the US. In the book we are using, there are 3 characters - an American girl, her boyfriend, and the Chinese girl who is friends with the American girl :-) On Wed, I went to hear about Goldman Sachs - they are hiring technology people and are also looking for interns. While I cannot apply because I am still a freshman, it was good to know about the company. :-) I am also putting together a puzzle. When I was in high school, one of my goals was to put together jigsaw puzzles and decorate my room with them. I don't think I realized then, that I would have no time. Next Monday, I am going to hear the second in command to the Dalai Lama speak during lunch time. :-) I almost forgot - I'm also taking a Sleep and Dreams class. That is such a fun class - it's like entertainment instead of an actual class. The professor wasn't there yesterday because he was still in Hawaii with family. So, there was a live video feed from Maui. This is a funny guy! Not typical at all! His name is Dr. Dement. Seriously. Monday will bring narcoleptic dogs. Unfortunately, this is the last year Dr Dement will be teaching the course so I cannot really take it for a grade. The grading system is crazy too - this is the only class I know that gives out bonus points so liberally. Even falling asleep in class can earn bonus points, provided that the student, upon waking up, tells what s/he dreamed about and analyzes it. |
